The Egyptian-born Qaradawi has an immensely popular TV show on Al Jazeera, and was voted the world’s third most influential public intellectual (in a list clearly influenced by Muslim votes: the first ten are Muslims, Chomsky is the eleventh): “The World’s Top 20 Public Intellectuals,” Foreignpolicy.com, 16 June 2008. See Jakob Skovgaard-Petersen and Bettina Graf, eds., The Global Mufti: The Phenomenon of Yusuf al-Qaradawi (New York: Columbia University Press, 2009).
